History of Creation
100 Thieves is an American esports organization founded in 2017 by former professional Call of Duty player and popular streamer Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag. After retiring from professional gaming, Nadeshot wanted to create his own organization, combining his love for games and deep understanding of media content. His goal was to build not just a team, but an organization that blends esports, fashion, and media influence.
With his experience and insight into the industry, Nadeshot secured significant investments, including support from NBA player Dan Gilbert, owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. These resources allowed 100 Thieves to quickly enter the esports scene and establish themselves as a serious contender.
From the very beginning, 100 Thieves actively developed not only as a team but also as a brand. The organization launched its own clothing lines, which became popular among fans, and maintained a strong presence on social media, attracting a younger audience and becoming one of the most recognizable teams in the esports world.
First Roster
The first esports team of 100 Thieves debuted in League of Legends when the organization bought a slot in the North American LCS in late 2017. The first lineup included:
- Ssumday (Kim Chan-ho) — a top-laner from South Korea, known for his strong mechanical skills and solid positioning.
- Meteos (William Hartman) — a legendary North American jungler famous for his experience and map control.
- Ryu (Yoo Sang-wook) — mid-laner, formerly of H2k-Gaming, another experienced South Korean player.
- Cody Sun (Simon Han) — AD carry, who had already proven himself as one of the best marksmen in the region.
- Aphromoo (Zaqueri Black) — an experienced support and team captain, a key figure in the LCS known for his leadership and support play.
This roster quickly found success. In their very first split of the 2018 LCS season, 100 Thieves reached the playoffs and secured second place, losing to Team Liquid. This was a remarkable result for a new team. Later that year, they also qualified for the 2018 World Championship, further solidifying their position on the global stage.
Best Moments
Since its founding, 100 Thieves has had many standout moments:
LCS 2018 Spring Split — In their first LCS season, 100 Thieves reached the finals and took second place. It was an incredible debut for a new organization, drawing attention from both fans and sponsors.
Qualifying for the 2018 World Championship — Qualifying for Worlds in their first year was a major achievement for 100 Thieves. Although their performance at the tournament was not groundbreaking, simply participating was a huge success for the organization.
Expansion into Other Disciplines — 100 Thieves did not limit themselves to League of Legends. They soon expanded by adding rosters in Call of Duty, Valorant, and Apex Legends, establishing themselves as a multi-disciplinary team and growing their presence in other esports arenas.
Success in Valorant — In 2021, 100 Thieves achieved significant success in Valorant, winning several major tournaments and solidifying themselves as one of the top teams in this discipline. Their victory at the VCT NA Last Chance Qualifier allowed them to compete on the international stage and earn high rankings.
Media Influence Growth — In addition to their sporting achievements, 100 Thieves has actively developed their media presence. Their YouTube channel and social media platforms have continued to gain popularity, producing content with streamers, bloggers, and celebrities, making the team not just an esports organization but also an entertainment platform.
Victory in LCS 2021 Summer Split — A crucial moment for the organization came when they finally claimed the LCS championship title, confirming their status as one of the best teams in North America.
100 Thieves is more than just an esports team. It is a brand that combines sports, fashion, and media, becoming one of the most popular and influential organizations on the global esports scene.
