History of Creation
Fnatic is one of the most famous and respected esports organizations in the world. Founded in 2004 by Australian Sam Mathews, Fnatic started with an ambitious idea to unite talented players into a team that could compete on the global stage. At that time, esports was just beginning to gain popularity, and few could have imagined that the industry would become global. Mathews saw the potential and made the right move by creating an organization that would soon become synonymous with success and innovation in esports.
Fnatic’s first achievements came in games like Counter-Strike and World of Warcraft. However, true recognition came as they expanded into other games, especially League of Legends and Dota 2. Fnatic became a team that always aimed to be at the top of the global stage, and throughout its history, they have consistently proven this ambition.
Fnatic’s First Roster
Fnatic’s first roster was assembled in Counter-Strike and consisted of five European players who quickly gained attention with their performances on the international stage. The lineup was:
- Patrik “cArn” Sättermon — the team captain and one of the best players of that era.
- Harley “dsn” Örwall — a legendary sniper, whose reactions often made the difference in intense matches.
- Oscar “Archi” Torgersen — a versatile player capable of fulfilling various roles.
- Marcus “zet” Sundström — a young talent who would later become a world-class professional.
- Erik “Medion” de Jong — played a key role in the early stages of the team’s development.
This roster became the foundation on which the organization’s future success was built. Counter-Strike was one of the main esports disciplines at the time, and Fnatic aimed to be among the best right from the start.
Best Moments
Fnatic has had many bright and memorable moments over the years. Here are some of the most significant:
Winning the 2009 Counter-Strike World Championship. This victory was a milestone for the team. They triumphed at the 2009 World Cyber Games, which was considered the esports Olympics of that era, cementing their status as an elite team in the world of esports.
Winning the 2011 League of Legends World Championship. Fnatic became the first team in history to win the League of Legends World Championship. This occurred in 2011 when LoL was just starting to gain popularity. From that moment, Fnatic became one of the most recognizable teams in this discipline.
Dominance in CS. In the mid-2010s, Fnatic experienced a golden era in CS. Their roster, including players like Olof “olofmeister” Kajbjer, Jesper “JW” Wecksell, and Robin “flusha” Rönnquist, dominated the international scene, winning three CS Majors — DreamHack Winter 2013, ESL One Katowice 2015, and ESL One Cologne 2015. Fnatic during this period was rightfully considered one of the best teams in CS history.
Success in Dota 2. While Fnatic has not been as dominant in Dota 2 as in other disciplines, they regularly participate in The International and other major tournaments, representing the Southeast Asia region.
Consistent success in League of Legends LEC. Fnatic is one of the most successful teams in the history of the European League of Legends scene. They have won the LEC (formerly EU LCS) multiple times and regularly represent Europe at the World Championships, including the 2018 finals where they lost to Invictus Gaming.
Fnatic is a team with a rich history and immense influence on the development of esports. As one of the oldest organizations on the professional scene, they have remained at the top for over 15 years, expanding into new disciplines, attracting new talent, and inspiring millions of fans worldwide. Thanks to their achievements in games like Counter-Strike, League of Legends, and CS, Fnatic has forever etched its name in the history of esports, and their ambitions don’t stop there.
