Gen.G Esports is one of the brightest and most successful esports organizations, attracting attention with its results and ambitious strategy. While Gen.G is known for its teams across various disciplines, its most notable success has been in League of Legends (LoL). But let’s start with the creation story of this renowned organization.

Creation History

Gen.G’s story began in 2017 when the South Korean organization KSV eSports acquired Samsung Galaxy, the team that had won the League of Legends World Championship in 2017. At the time, Samsung Galaxy was a legendary team, known for its dominant performances on the world stage. After the acquisition, the organization rebranded as Gen.G (short for Generation Gaming), symbolizing a new generation in esports.

This was more than just a name change—Gen.G focused on building a global organization with headquarters in both South Korea and Los Angeles, combining Eastern and Western approaches to esports.

First Roster

Gen.G’s first roster was essentially an updated version of the 2017 World Championship-winning Samsung Galaxy team. It was an incredibly experienced and strong lineup, remaining competitive on the global stage. The lineup was as follows:

  • Top: CuVee
  • Jungle: Ambition (one of the most experienced players in the world at his position)
  • Mid: Crown
  • ADC: Ruler
  • Support: CoreJJ

While this roster did not replicate the success of 2017, it remained a stable force, consistently competing at the highest level in both the Korean and international scenes. They became a symbol of stability and high-level play.

Best Moments

Gen.G’s greatest glory came during the Samsung Galaxy era, when the team won the 2017 League of Legends World Championship, before the rebrand. However, after becoming Gen.G, the organization did not rest on its laurels and continued to aim for new heights.

One of Gen.G’s key moments was finishing second in the LCK Spring 2020 split, showcasing powerful gameplay and narrowly missing out on the championship in the final. This showed that Gen.G was not only capable of competing with the strongest teams in Korea but was also poised to challenge for titles.

Another highlight came when Gen.G reached the semifinals of the 2021 League of Legends World Championship, once again placing among the top teams in the world. The team played impressively against the world’s strongest opponents. Ruler, one of the players who had been with the team since their 2017 victory, continued to showcase his incredible skills, becoming a symbol of Gen.G’s stability and strength.

A major breakthrough came during the LCK Summer 2022, when Gen.G finally won the Korean championship. This was a pivotal moment for the team, which had long been on the verge of greatness. The victory proved that they were not only contenders but capable of winning in the most competitive league in the world.

Present Day

Today, Gen.G is not just a team; it is a global esports organization that successfully manages teams across various disciplines, including LoL, Overwatch, and Fortnite. A hallmark of Gen.G is its focus on nurturing and developing young talent, while balancing the traditions of the Korean esports scene with global trends.

As of 2024, Gen.G remains among the elite in global esports, regularly competing in World Championships and striving for new titles. Ruler, despite years of competition, continues to be one of the team’s main stars, while new players bring fresh energy to the roster.

Gen.G is a story of how a strong organization can not only maintain its legacy but continue to grow and adapt to changing conditions. From their World Championship victory in 2017 to their current successes, Gen.G remains a prime example of resilience, professionalism, and ambition in esports. Their best moments may still be ahead, but even now, they have etched their name in esports history as one of the most successful and influential organizations.
