History of the Austrian national football team

Österreichische Mannschaft UEFA EURO 2024

The Austrian national football team, also known as “The Team”, has an interesting history at the European Championships. Although Austria has often been overshadowed by other nations in European football over the years, the team has continued to improve and made notable progress at recent European Championships.

Austria’s first participation in a European Championship took place in 2008, when they co-hosted the tournament with Switzerland. Despite the euphoria of hosting, the Austrian team was unable to progress beyond the group stage. Nevertheless, the experience of being part of a major international tournament was an important step for the development of Austrian football.

Austria achieved its biggest surprise at the 2016 European Championships in France. The team qualified for the tournament, but the group stage did not go as hoped. A draw against Portugal was the highlight, but a defeat against Hungary and another draw against Iceland meant an early exit. Nevertheless, Austria showed signs that the team is on the right track.

Austria took a significant step forward at the 2020 European Championships, which took place in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the leadership of coach Franco Foda, the team reached the knockout stages for the first time by defeating North Macedonia and Ukraine. In the round of 16, Austria faced Italy, one of the tournament favorites, and put up an impressive fight before losing in extra time. This performance showed that Austria is ready to compete at the highest level.

The Austrian national football team has shown in recent years that it has the potential to assert itself at the European Championships. With a mix of experienced players and up-and-coming talent, Austria is well on its way to further establishing itself in future tournaments and delighting fans with exciting performances.
