History of the English football team
The England national football team, known as the Three Lions, has a long and complex relationship with the European Championship. Despite the rich football tradition and the fact that England is considered the “birthplace of football”, the European Championships often brought disappointment and missed opportunities to the English team. England’s greatest achievement to date is reaching the Euro 2020 final, which was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
England first qualified for the European Championships in 1968 and reached the semi-finals, where they lost to Yugoslavia. In subsequent years, the English team’s results at the European Championships remained mixed. An outstanding event was the 1996 European Championships in England. The team reached the semi-finals and played against Germany, with the game ending in a penalty shoot-out – an injury that would haunt England for many years to come.
The 2020 European Championships, which took place in 2021, marked a turning point for England. Led by Gareth Southgate, the team demonstrated a combination of tactical discipline and offensive creativity. The route to the final was marked by impressive victories, including a convincing victory over Germany in the round of 16 and a dramatic semi-final against Denmark. However, the final against Italy at Wembley ended in a bitter defeat on penalties and reopened an old wound.
Despite the disappointment of defeat in the final, England showed at Euro 2020 that they have the potential to become one of the best teams in Europe. With a young, talented squad and a coach known for his steady hand and tactical acumen, England are well placed for future tournaments. Known for their passion and loyalty, England fans remain hopeful that the Three Lions will one day win their first European title.
