History of the Georgian football team

Georgisches Team UEFA EURO 2024

The Georgian national football team, known as the “Crusaders,” has an interesting and controversial history when it comes to qualifying for the European Championships. Although Georgia has not often participated in the European Championships, the team has made significant progress in recent years and has the potential to establish itself at European level in the near future.

A turning point in the recent history of Georgian football was the UEFA Nations League, in which the team achieved several notable victories and qualified for the Euro 2020 playoffs. Although Georgia lost the crucial play-off game against North Macedonia, the team showed remarkable determination and fighting spirit, giving fans hope of future qualification.

Players like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Giorgi Chakvetadze have attracted attention recently, proving that Georgia has talented footballers capable of competing at international level. Georgian fans are passionate and support their team with great enthusiasm despite all the difficulties.

And then, in March 2024, a significant event happened for the whole country – the Georgian national team qualified for the European Championship for the first time in history. This was made possible by a home win on penalties over the Greek national team. The Georgians play there in a group with Turkey, the Czech Republic and Portugal. And no matter how Willy Sagnol’s team performed there, this team has already made a significant contribution to the history of Georgian sport.
