History of the Dutch football team
The Netherlands national football team, also known as the “Oranje”, has an impressive history at the European Championships. The Netherlands is one of the most successful nations in European football and has a long tradition of talented players and attractive, attacking football. The Netherlands’ greatest achievement at the European Championships was winning the 1988 tournament in Germany.
Under the leadership of coach Rinus Michels and with legendary players such as Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard, the Netherlands dominated the 1988 European Championships. The team displayed an exhilarating style known as “Total Football”. The most memorable moment of the tournament was Marco van Basten’s incredible volley in the final against the Soviet Union, which sealed the 2-0 victory and gave the Netherlands their first European title.
Since then, the Netherlands have consistently shown strong performances at the European Championships. At Euro 2000, which they co-hosted with Belgium, they reached the semi-finals but lost to Italy on penalties. Euro 2004 was another notable tournament where the Netherlands also made it to the semi-finals but were again eliminated on penalties, this time against Portugal.
Euro 2012 was a disappointing tournament for the Netherlands as they lost all three group games. After a long absence, the Netherlands returned at Euro 2020, reaching the round of 16 before being eliminated by the Czech Republic.
The Dutch national team is known for its attacking style of play and talented players. Despite some setbacks, “Oranje” remains one of the most popular and exciting teams in Europe. The Netherlands’ fans are known for their passionate support and enthusiasm for the game, making the European Championships a special event for the Dutch team.
