History of the Serbian football team

Serbien-Team bei der EURO 2024

The Serbian national football team looks back on an eventful history marked by changes and challenges. As the successor to the Yugoslav national team, Serbia has the legacy of a football nation that was once one of the strongest in Europe. However, Serbia has not yet been able to take part in the European Championships, which underlines the complexity of the situation.

The Yugoslav national team, from which Serbia emerged, has achieved significant success at European Championships in the past. The team reached the final twice, in 1960 and 1968, and displayed an impressive style of play. These successes are part of the legacy of Serbian football and form the basis for the ambitions of the current national team.

Since Serbia’s independence in 2006, the country has struggled to gain a foothold in European football. The qualifying phase for the European Championships was characterized by ups and downs for Serbia. The team achieved several notable victories, but also lost important games that always ended in non-qualification.

Although Serbia qualified for the World Cup, participation in the European Championships remained an unachieved goal until 2023. And only in the fall of 2023, the Serbian national team secured access to the European Championship for the first time in history, taking second place in the qualifying group.

Despite the existing problems, Serbia remains a team with great potential. With talented players such as Dusan Tadic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Aleksandar Mitrovic, the team is working to create a strong foundation for future qualifications. The European Championship is still a big goal and the Serbian national team is determined to realize their dream and prove themselves by participating in the final round of the 2024 European Championship.
