History of Creation
Weibo Gaming is a Chinese esports team that officially emerged in 2021, but its roots trace back to the Suning team. Suning Esports, founded in 2017, was for a long time one of the stable participants in the Chinese League of Legends Pro League (LPL). The team gained international recognition after an impressive performance at the 2020 World Championship, where they reached the finals, losing only to the Korean team DAMWON Gaming.
Following this success, in 2021, the Chinese social media platform Weibo acquired Suning’s roster and rebranded the team. This is how Weibo Gaming (WBG) was born, instantly attracting attention due to its strong lineup and support from a major media giant. The change in name and structure did not affect the team’s ambitions — Weibo Gaming continued competing in the LPL with the goal of becoming one of the top forces on the international esports scene.
Weibo Gaming’s First Roster
After the 2021 rebranding, Weibo Gaming’s first official roster consisted mostly of players from Suning, including:
- Bin (top laner) — a talented and aggressive player who made a name for himself with a stellar performance at the 2020 World Championship. His play on Camille in the tournament’s final became legendary.
- SofM (jungler) — a Vietnamese superstar known for his unconventional approach to the jungle role. SofM was a key figure in Suning’s run to the World Championship finals.
- Angel (mid laner) — a consistent and experienced player, often taking on the role of the main initiator for the team.
- huanfeng (AD carry) — a young and promising player whose performances as an ADC gained global attention thanks to his high mechanical skills.
- ON (support) — huanfeng’s support on the bot lane, forming an important duo.
This lineup was not only strong but also very cohesive, with excellent synergy among the players, which helped the team perform at a high level in the LPL and internationally.
Best Moments
One of the most memorable moments for Weibo Gaming, still under the name Suning, was their performance at the 2020 World Championship. That year, the team, considered underdogs, made it to the finals, defeating powerhouses like JD Gaming and Top Esports. Although they lost to DAMWON Gaming in the finals, the tournament proved that the team was capable of great achievements.
Under the new Weibo Gaming brand, the team remained competitive in the LPL. In 2022, WBG had a successful spring split, especially after strengthening the roster with stars like TheShy, a former World Champion with Invictus Gaming, and SwordArt, who returned to China after playing for TSM in North America. This lineup made the team one of the hottest in China, attracting millions of fans worldwide.
However, the team also faced challenges — they didn’t always manage to live up to expectations and achieve international success after the rebranding. Nonetheless, Weibo Gaming remains one of the most popular and ambitious teams on the Chinese League of Legends scene.
Weibo Gaming is a team that combines youth, talent, and the enormous backing of one of China’s largest media giants. They have come a long way from Suning to Weibo Gaming, solidifying their place among the elite of the Chinese esports scene. Despite challenges related to constant roster changes and high expectations, WBG maintains its ambitions and is determined to once again become a contender for the World Championship title in League of Legends. Their story is only just beginning, and fans eagerly await to see what heights they will reach in the future.
